The BBC iPlayer is now streamed on Android 2.2 phones. But at present, just one is available. The BBC iPlayer is now accessible on phones using the Android 2.2 ‘Froyo’ operating system. Customers of the Android 2.2 OS can now catch up with their favourite shows by logging on to the iPlayer web site.

The catch is the fact that only the Google Nexus One has received the Froyo update, with the Motorola Droid 2 expected to receive it as a free of charge upgrade when it launches in August 2010. The HTC mobile phones, like the HTC Desire, are most likely to be included in the exclusive Froyo membership.

The new os supports Flash 10.1, which allows the optimised version of the iPlayer to run easily at a Flash stream of 400kbps. The User interface has been modified in an attempt to make sure maximum compatibility with touchscreen devices.

The BBC warns that customers can gain access to the iPlayer just with Wi-Fi and a really powerful mobile phone processor, which the majority of the Android 2.2 phones will have. Android 3. is expected to be released December 2010 and is codenamed ‘Gingerbread’.

Google is well underway at their developers seminar, Google I/O, in which the Android 2.2 Operating system codenamed ‘FroYo’ has just be revealed with numerous new functions.

These characteristics include USB tethering as well as an inbuilt WiFi hotspot for 2.2 Android mobile phones. Also shown off was a ‘cloud-to-device’ API and advanced search. Bringing the challenge to Apple, the Android 2.2 OS will assist Flash videos, the lack of which inside the iPhone is some thing which is constantly berated.

Even more targeting the iPhone, Google’s Android 2.2 OS will utilise an overhauled Application search system and provide Apps able to become stored externally on SD cards. This brand new Application storage choice is something that has been wanted by users and developers alike. Android 3., codenamed ‘Gingerbread’ have also been hinted at these days and is expected to arrive December this year. We know this is a bit late, however thought I should add it.

The upgrade will come in two parts, the first of which will roll out from this week and will be detected when the Hero next automatically checks for software updates.

The single most popular mobiles that you can buy – the HTC Desire, has become for sale in a black model. The HTC Desire Black is an superior Nexus one, it brings you an optical trackpad in place of the Nexus One’s trackball, furthermore HTC’s superb Sense UI. Ergonomically, the Black HTC Desire inside the, on paper it’s slightly larger compared to Google Android Nexus One however in real-life this is not apparent.

This HTC Desire Black carries a fabulous 3.7 inch wide screen, AMOLED display, offering 720×480 pixels resolution. Debatably crisper and more clear than all other displays available to buy, it delivers touchscreen responsiveness which is equally as good as what you will find on the phones like the iPhone and, what is more, it is a really fast mobile phone handset. The mixture of Android 2.1 and the Snapdragon CPU which is 1GHz with 512Mb of RAM and ROM really does enable you to zap through opening applications and then moving between them.

Its multimedia credentials, are quietly competent as opposed to fantastic – such as the 5 mega-pixel, autofocus digital camera with LED flash and its 32GB memory card capacity. Its has a sleek overall look and the used curved edges around the handset, so it fits well in the palm of the users hand.

Microsoft have said to signed a licensing agreement with mobile phone handset manufacturer HTC, under which it will obtain royalty payments on HTC mobile phones running Google’s Android operating system.

Microsoft, which owns an array of software patents, didn’t say exactly what technology in the phones the agreement concerns.

The deal comes as smartphones using Google’s new OS – which Google allows phone manufacturers to use for free – gain in popularity. Microsoft charges handset makers like HTC and the like to use its Windows phone software.

The smartphone marketplace is riddled with legal disputes as software companies and handset manufacturers wrangle over who warrants pay out for technology behind new units which go well beyond traditional mobiles.

In March, Apple sued HTC over its Android phones, accusing it of infringing 20 hardware and software patents relevant to the iPhone. HTC makes a lot of Android-powered phones, for example the HTC Desire and the HTC Legend.

This deal signals that Microsoft is not gonna start a similar legal patent challenge with HTC over Android phones. Licensing arrangements are standard procedure for Microsoft, that has similar deals with more than six hundred companies.

Google have released amazing news for Android users that have the Android 1.6 operating system or above with the kick off of Google Maps voice guided navigation software available FREE of charge for customers in the UK and Ireland. Popular HTC Mobile Phones models like the HTC Desire, HTC Legend and HTC Hero mobile phones can all benefit from an excellent offering from Google.

The features included rival those on stand alone Sat Navs. Queries may be made through text input, voice command and by double tapping on contacts with address information. Knowing the address of desired destinations is of no consequence, guided navigation can be triggered with either a business name or kind of business.

When nearing a location the display changes to the highly publicised Street View. Useful additions also include traffic awareness as the road ahead is pointed out in green, yellow or red to give prior warning of traffic congestion. Multiple levels of information layering may also be added using the 3D-satellite view and optional icons for petrol stations, restaurants and parking, etc. This new application feature will help you out no end and is another sign that mobile phones are moving towards being the ultimate all in one device.

So far, we have learnt that the HTC Dragon will have a 1GHz processor, 800 x 480 display, multi-touch display, 5MP camera, Wi-Fi and GPS on an Android 2.0 handset. From the pictures, the HTC Dragon seems to have home, menu, back and search buttons positioned along the bottom of the touchscreen with a large trackball beneath these.
